Gee, That Little Story Really Helped My Anxiety

Post #2  about moving… If you are planning on moving, you know, EVER, you may wish to refrain from reading this.

Our moving company called us last week to discuss our needs during our upcoming move.  Since I’d like to avoid another disastrous move, I made sure to let this moving company know what had happened during the last move.  I explained that many of our breakables had been improperly packed, resulting in the loss of several treasured items.

And of course I made it clear that my wallet had been stolen by the movers during the last move and that I was feeling really anxious about the possibility of having another bad experience.

The gentleman I was speaking with listened with a sympathetic ear.  He told me that he was the owner of this moving company and that he would be sure to send his best crew.  Since our belongings will have to be in storage for awhile, he assured me that he’d store our stuff at his own facility.  When we are ready to have our things delivered, he told me that he’d send the same crew to unload the truck.

All of these reassurances did make me feel better.

Then he told me a little story he’d heard about another person’s horrific move and any *good* feelings I had vanished.

He’d heard recently about a woman who’d moved.  The movers had tried to demand more money before delivering her belongings.  Eventually the movers did unload the truck.  The next day, one of the movers came back to attack the lady, but luckily she was able to lock herself in the bedroom and call 911.

What the flippity flap?!?!

I am feeling SO MUCH BETTER about this move.  That story really helped my anxiety.

If you need me, I’ll be in the corner, rocking back and forth in the fetal position.

  5. WHY would he have felt the need to share that? It doesn’t make getting your wallet stolen seem so bad, though does it? He was just trying to be helpful!
Don’t worry. He sounds like a Num-Nut, but seems like a nice guy at heart. At least from what you wrote about him. I am in no way affiliated with your moving company. :0)

If it makes you feel any better, I have moved 3 times in the past two years (with 3 different moving companies) and had no problems whatsoever.

Are you guys having to deal with the same corporate moving company that we both know and love? If so, I’m sorry. We got a different one this time, though we haven’t done enough to know if they’re better or worse than the other.

  11. Something very similar to that happened to a friend of mine…they basically held her belongings hostage until she agreed to pay an extra 11grand. Then, while delivering her stuff, the guys kept making comments to the effect of, “Hmmmm…nice stuff. What’s the address here?” to let her know they were taking note…so she was afraid to go after them. She is CERTAIN they’d either steal her stuff back and/or harm her and her family.

That probably makes you feel better, right?

I’ve moved several times and never had that type of problem. The key is to follow your gut AND do your research…if the guy seems sweet and honest and you’re comfortable with him AND he has good references/reviews the likelihood of anything bad happening is very, very slim. These scary stories are the anomaly!

  19. I can tell you lots of stories, but I won’t. Working in law enforcement for 11 years, I’ve seen everything.

    1. See if you can place a lock on the truck before they leave. And only you can remove that lock. Movers make stops along the way and you are not following them.

    2. Bring things with YOU that are truely valuable to you. Priceless things, family pictures, jewelry.

    3. Don’t be too chatty with the movers.

    4. Make sure you can get their names. So if you need to report back to the company, you know who you are talking about.

    5. Make sure they see you’re husband ALOT, and not just you and small children.

I hope it all goes well. I’ve never moved from different states. I am also paranoid. We’ve done our own moves every time because I’m freaking paranoid.

  28. I had a pair of movers tell me that they didn’t know what had happened to my television.

Over and over, they insisted there was no TV in their truck.

Finally, after much arguing, I marched out to the truck and took a look for myself.

Guess what was there, in plain view?

    I totally get your wariness.

  46. I’ve heard horror stories about moving, but I’ve done it 4 times in the past 7 years, and we have not had problems with movers at all. We did our own packing, though. This time, I’ll be getting them to pack it up, and that sort of scares little-anal-me, although I deem it a necessity since I will have two kids under the age of 2 to contend with.

  50. seriously???? wtf? that’s really awful…do they do criminal background checks or psych evaluations on their employees? guess not!

luckily (or maybe not!), we don’t have money to use a moving company, so we’ll only have to keep an eye out for our siblings and in-laws to make sure their not stealing anything!

hope the packing is going okay! we’re trudging along over here…of course we’ve got more time than you (35 days as of today).
