Coke and Peanuts

Several weeks ago, Tate came home and told me that he’d seen the most disgusting thing ever that day.

“Oh my God!  What did you see?”

“Someone had put PEANUTS in their COKE and they were….drinking it!!!,” he said with his face twisted in disgust.  “It was all chunky and nasty looking.”

Apparently he’d never heard of someone putting peanuts in their coke.  Although I’ve never actually done it myself, I have actually heard of it.  I remember my parents talking about getting bottles of coke and a package of peanuts out of vending machines as teenagers and how it was a “cool” thing to do.

Anyway, since most of our arguments are solved via the Internet, he said (all sassified like), “Why don’t you just blog about it…”

“Um?  YOU, little man, are NOT the boss of me.  I’m not blogging about it unless I WANT to blog about.  I’m my own woman.”

“No.  Blog about it right NOW.  I’m SO winning this battle.”

I guffawed very loudly.  Nobody tells me what to blog.  No. Bod. Y.

So it’s been at least three weeks, and I am finally ready to blog it.  And most certainly NOT because Tate wanted me to, but because my curiosity has been sufficiently brewed and has now piqued.

Have you heard of coke and peanuts?  Have you tried it?

I have NEVER heard of it. Never.

Just this past Christmas my family was talking about Boiled Peanuts! What? I saw someone here actually tried boiled peanuts. According to the talk on Christmas people would actually wait in line for them at carnivals – when there was no line for something like a Deep Fried Candy Bar!

Do you know, I had never, ever heard of it – until yesterday, when reading a very ordinary book from the library it was mentioned (can’t find the scene, but its before page 96 of The Queen of October by Shelley Fraser Mickle – published 1989) – I thought it was weird when I read it, and it is doubly weird that I happened to check your blog (which is a very occasional thing – I have 300 blogs I happen to occasionally check) and you mention it.

I just have to tell you that one of my fondest memories involves Coke with peanuts. My parents liked it, and I just have a really sort of hazy…sepia, really…kind of memory of riding in the car with my parents….my dad was very relaxed and easy going, we got Cokes (What kind of Coke do you want…a root beer? Sprite?). They were actually Cokes, and we got them out of one of the machines where you put the money in and then pulled the coke bottle out through the verticle door….pop top bottles. Mmmmm….it was good, and the memory is even tastier.

It is a southern thing! Not only have I heard of it but I actually drink it every chance I can. Coke really doesn’t agree with my stomach anymorre, but add peanuts and it cuts the coke so that I can drink it! Its sweet, its salty, what could be better? Kinda like eating party mints and nuts together. Of course I guess it could look and sound gross to someone who has not tried it.

So funny, we were just talking about it tonight (that is me and my yankee boyfriend) and he was clueless of this. I grew up in 60′s and my family did this, but it was not with a whole pack of nuts. Now tell Tate to give you some “sugar” (that is southern for” Kiss me”) and tell him to “hug your neck” and he must say “yes ma’am to everyone (I even said “yes ma’am to men in my family.. grandmothers orders!) And if you get the piece of cake with the toothpick in it you MUST take it back to the cook and give them a hug/kiss… and I could go on! God ya gotta love the South!! Oh.. and if you order a “coke” in my neck of the woods, they are going to say “ok.. will what kind?” and you will then say “Dr. Pepper please” because that is the only “coke” we tend to drink here!
