Step Away From the Dynamite

I woke up this morning feeling foul.  It’s one of those days that I must monitor my every word and every action, knowing that I could explode on the nearest offenders.

Tate is lucky he’s at work today.

My children are lucky that I know how volatile my mood is today.

I’ve been keeping a running dialogue of self-checking reminders in my head all morning.

Don’t throw the green spoon at Carson, simply hand it to him and take the purple spoon away.  He’ll stop crying if you do.

Ella will be napping soon.  Don’t scream at her to shut up.  She’s just a BABY.

You don’t even believe in spanking!  Keep your hands to yourself.

Grow up!  Act like the PARENT, not the toddler.

I don’t know what, if anything specific, set me off.  Tate and I went on a date last night that was almost as fun as taking both kids with us.  Almost.  It is actually supposed to be in the 60’s today, but both of my kids are sick so we are stuck at home for what feels like the 873rd day in a row in exile.  Maybe it’s the 8th day of Aunt Flo’s visit.  Maybe the upcoming “vacation” home is stressing me out.  Maybe I’m just tired.

I don’t want to feel like this.

Don’t drink all the alcohol in the house.  The authorities would frown upon that.  It would also cost thousands of dollars in therapy for the children.

Forget about baking those brownies to self-medicate.

  1. Oh goodness Jennifer. I hope you can make the mental space to just breath today. And I wish each child to take syncronized 3 hour naps.

  4. Oh I’m having one of those too! I’m trying to stay away from my boys as much as possible and take a *lot* of deep breaths and pauses before responding/reacting to something to give my brain that extra moment to consider the scope of my reaction. I’ve also had a lot of internal commentary about everything.

Mine, though I don’t know what’s causing it, has brought multiple/overlapping panic attacks with it. Yay for Miserable Monday!

  15. I’ve SO had days like these.

Sounds like a good movie day with sick kids…snuggle up and all take a nap.

Chocolate and alcohol will help…and a deep breath or two along the way.

    Hope it’s better tomorrow.

  25. I get like that every 28 days or so. I just want to jump out of my skin. Is there any way you could leave and go shopping or to a movie the minute Tate walks in from work? You are totally allowed to do that. And there are some movie theaters where they will sell you beer.

  26. that’s totally how it is around here. to get to church on time (11 am) means that I have to be at the butt crack of dawn, bath and feed 4 kids, get myself ready, change all the kids clothes again, feed them again, forget about doing my hair or eating breakfast, load the kids into the car, and try not to freak out the whole time.

meanwhile the hubs irons his clothes, feeds himself, gets himself dressed, and then yells at us for not leaving on time.

    yes. i cry with you.

  28. Sorry that you are having a hard day. I am very impressed by your presence of mind to observe yourself in the mood and not get swallowed up by it. Remember to breath. Maybe it is time for a family dance party with some loud music! It helps me sometimes.

  30. Yeah, any SAHM who DOESN’T have a day like this has probably had a significant amount of her brain removed. After both pregnancies, Aunt Flo’s return visits came in like a freakin’ tidal wave. The hormones, the PMS, the mood swings, extended timeframe….it all sucked. So, good for you for finding your outlet. Oh, and I agree that you should consider getting out tonight. Tate sounds like a smart man and will realize that it’s in everyone’s best interest.

  32. as a former SLP, i’m sure that you wish for the 20 to 45 minute session. when they irritate you, you send them out the door and know that they won’t be back for at least one day. oh, we’ve all had clients/students like that…don’t lie.
unfortunately (and sometimes, fortunately) i’m still working as the SLP. but there are definitely times on the weekend, where i wish i could send my girls out the door and get a new group in. but, there are also times when i wish i could send out my groups and get my own girls in my room. at least if they are screwy…i know who’s to blame.
on a positive note, my youngest - cora - has started saying mama…
on a negative note, it’s CONSTANT.
give and take give and take…
p.s. don’t worry about responding…i feel awful when you do…i’m the last of your concerns! i only write comments because i feel the need to. just take care of yourself and the babes! (and go for the chocolate…)

So I suggest having a Business Meeting with Ben and Jerry (NY Super Fudge Chunk) That should do the trick.

It is gonna get better. Soon it will be warmer out. And if it doesn’t get warmer, well then you should just hop on a plane with the kids and come out here and we’ll go to Disneyland. Disneyland makes everything better.
