I’m currently drinking the bloody kool-aid

While you all have been diving headfirst into leftover turkey and dressing, I’ve been reading this:

Photobucket

All you Twilight fanatics have a lot of explaining to do because I’m on page 390 and I’m just NOT feeling it.  I’ll keep reading, though because I’m tired of being the sole being on the planet who hasn’t read this book.  I WANT to love this book, I DO!  Maybe I need to read the whole series to really “get” it?

To be continued…

See, here’s how it goes, I have yet to read the series either. I’m somewhat afraid of it, considering that 100% of people that have told me about it are all gushing, “you HAVE to read it, it’s the BEST EVER!!!” One, that sets hopes too high, second, it makes me feel I’d be going out for some voluntary brainwashing. But on Thursday, I heard from my MIL who dissed the writing style (she’s a HUGE vampire and romance fan) … and got agreements from my SIL. It seemed it just takes someone to say it, and they didn’t even look over their shoulders to see who might overhear. ;)

I definitely didn’t read any of the Twilight books until just a couple months ago. I never had any desire to, mostly because I’d always read the back cover, cringe at the cliche, and put it back on the shelf. I finally sat down and decided to see what the hype was about… Here’s what I, as a less-than-diehard fan, picked up on.

The books start REALLY slowly. I mean, they get moving and all sure, but it’s impossible to get truly LOST in them until late in the book, when the real drama starts. That just doesn’t work for some people.

Honestly, I finished the first book because I fell in love with Edward’s mischief and, later, with the Cullen family. I finished the second book, painful though it was, because I needed to see it end. I finished the third book because it had Cullens. And I finished the fourth because people finally stopped playing.

That was another issue I had throughout the books… Characters just play too much. Bella lets people tell her what to do all the time, which seriously shouldn’t fly. It’s the major reason I can’t stand her. She’s such a pushover!

…Ahem. That’s a rant for another time, though. The point of this was meant to be… that it’s okay if you’re not impressed yet. And it’s okay if you’re never impressed. The Twilight books aren’t for everyone. They’re not the best-written books, and the premise itself is quite old by now. Don’t feel bad if you just can’t get into it. It’s okay! Really.

Ok, I felt the same exact way. i made calls saying that I was half way through the book and I have no clue what the hype was about. But finish it for sure…..you will GET IT!! I did! Now I am a 31 year old Twilight freak. Yes, I went with a group of friends, all wearing t-shirts, and stood in line for two hours to watch the movie on opening night. My advice; read the books, skip the movie! Happy reading!!

I read it before the hype.. and loved it. You ahve to read it with a grain of salt. Is it great literature?? No. Is it entertaining and cheesey in a Young adult fiction sort of way? Definitely. Not for everyone, but definitely for me. I liked Twilight the best, so dont waste your time on hte rest, if you are struggling through this one!

So, I drank the kool-aid, too, and it wasn’t until September. By Mid-October, I had finished the series and had re-read the first book. I work with 3 other 30-something ladies, and we all swooned over the storyline. For me, it reminded me of all of the “almost” that went on in high school romances. Lots of great teenage tension. Fun stuff!

I agree with some of the previous posters – if you don’t get into the storyline with Twilight, don’t bother with New Moon. It’ll just tick you off! I’m re-reading it now, trying not to be frustrated.

    Good luck! :-)

Haven’t read any of the books in any order at all. Plus, I keep hearing they’re for teenagers, so that kind of makes me not want to try reading it. Not saying anything against teenager books. I’m not sure what it is. I just keep getting reminded of it, and I run the opposite direction.

And did Anne Rice do this already??? That’s what I read in high school.

I bought the book tonight, finally, and only because we will be on a very long, um, road trip and thought it would be fun to read aloud (or to have something to burn for fire if things get really desperate/scary). If I’m that far in and still not interested, I’m going to be kind of annoyed.

I have read all four books and can tell you that if you’re not in love by the first book, you’ll only get more frustrated as you go along. The first two books were the most entertaining and the last two were not as fun and were way more irritating. I had more to nitpick towards the end than I had in the beginning.

Saw the movie and thought it was by far the silliest movie on the planet. Put the book down and find something else to read. Seriously. It’s more frustrating and annoying than entertaining.

Oh gosh, I was IN LOVE with Edward, and wanted an Edward of my very own by the time I finished that book. The only thing that irritates me is that it is PG, since it’s young adult. I am not used to being so frustrated!

But it’s not just you, either. There have been several books that my friends raved about and suggested that I just couldn’t get into. The Memory Keeper’s Daughter being one of them.

I guess different things just speak to different people. Speaking solely for myself….I loved it, and am reading New Moon, which I couldn’t wait to get my hands on. I don’t like it as much, but I feel that will change soon.

I had no desire to read it, but because there was such hubbub and I have an avid reader for a teen, I picked up Twilight.

I don’t think this series is for everyone. Just like the Harry Potter series…some people look at that one and go, “I don’t get it.” Which is cool. Not everyone has to like every book.

I am not a fan of Twilight (book 1). I wanted to like the story, but didn’t. There was a lot in it I found completely disturbing (especially as a parent of a teen). My teen and I have now had LONG discussions about healthy relationships.

Yet, I was oddly compelled to keep reading. But when I finished, I wasn’t going to read any of the other books.

My writing partner pushed me to read New Moon because I write Young Adult, and this is Young Adult, so it was market study.

Reluctantly, I picked up book 2.

    I am hooked. HOOKED.

There comes a point in book 2 where Bella does something INSANE, and I couldn’t put it down. Meyer’s writing had matrued, as had the story, and she captured gut-wrenching heartbreak exquisitely.

Book 3? Raced through it. Desperate to find a copy of book 4.
