I know that I poke fun at Tate right here on the ol’ blog a lot. Maybe too often.
In my defense, I’ve tried and tried to get him to start his very own blog to record his OWN stories in his OWN words. He could also use his own platform to make fun of me. Surely I’d be as good a source of blog material as he is!
Sometimes I feel sort of bad that he gets his panties in a wad about things I’ve said about him or pictures of him that I’ve posted. I’m not trying to make fun of him outright , (YES, REALLY), I just think that the way we interact is often funny and it’s a source for inspiration.
So in honor of my wonderful husband, I’m going to try and devote an entire post to NOT spinning the facts into hilarious yarns where he ends up the Sonny to my Cher. (TRY.) (It’s the operative word.)
For the first time in I-can’t-remember-how-long-because-my-brain-shot-out-of-me-with-Carson, Tate completely surprised me for Christmas. Since I’m *trying* to be nice, I won’t link to any of the posts I’ve written about not surprisingly being, well, NOT surprised.
This whole being surprised thing is significant because really all I ever want for Christmas is TO BE SURPRISED. (And it certainly doesn’t hurt if the surprise is something I like. A LOT.)
Tate was even so thoughtful to give me one of my gifts early. Before our trip to the North Pole, he presented me with my first gift of the Christmas season.
“I thought you’d like to open this one early,” he said, carefully placing it into my open hands.
The small-ish, square-shaped box held inside the camera lens I’ve been desperately wanting.
With tears in my eyes he explained, “I knew you’d want to take pictures of the kids tonight, so I hope it’s alright that I’m giving it to you now.”
(So far, so good in the being nice to Tate on my blog, yes? It’s super simple when HE does nice things!)
For weeks Tate had been acting panicked about having NOTHING to give me. He really did have to work a ridiculous amount of time between Thanksgiving and Christmas and hadn’t spent any time actually shopping, so it wasn’t unreasonable to believe him. After he gave me the lens, he asked me if my feelings would be hurt if that was my only gift. Since I’m not poking fun at Tate today, I won’t divulge why he said the lens was my only gift.
So come Christmas morning I was pleasantly surprised to receive dangly handmade earrings (by a jewelry maker, not handmade by Tate), brand new running shoes, and the Les Halles Cookbook by Anthony Bourdain (my pretend celebrity boyfriend.)
One gift remained, purposely held back by Tate.
“Don’t open that one yet,” he placed it gingerly alongside the other three gifts. “This one is the big-hitter!” He beamed proudly from ear to ear as I tried to imagine what could be better than a new lens, shoes, earrings, and my food porn bible. I ran through the things that I’d been really wanting. “Could it be the external flash I’ve had my eye on? Or maybe a Mac laptop?!” Oh how my mind soared with the possibilities!
Eagerly, yet carefully I unwrapped the gift. I wanted to savor each moment leading up to the big hitter gift, knowing that it would be something I’d remember for years. And truly, it IS something I’ll always remember.
(Tate wanted to know WHY I asked him to take a picture of me in my Snuggie. “You’re going to mock me on your blog again, aren’t you?” My response, an indignant, “…!”
(Carson ADORES the pink Snuggie.)
In the interest of saying only nice things today, I’ll end with, Happy 35th Birthday, Tate! I’m proud to be your wife and love having the distinct honor of loving you and poking fun at you on the Internet.

I told you that he would get you something stellar!! Tell me the lens so I can be jealous….was it the 50 mm 1.4??? My husband got me NOTHING….and in the midst of opening gifts xmas morning, our almost 4 year old son noticed no gifts were for mommy and started to cry. I’m pretty sure I’ll be getting something next year.
HOLD ON! Do you mean he got you nothing because you’re going to be buying a big ticket item soon OR he really got you NOTHING?!?!
And yes, it’s the 50mm 1.4. I adore it, feel like it’s worth every penny. It’s so much heavier and less chintzy plastic than my 1.8. (Also, my 1.8 was broken. So there’s that.)
Aw! What a guy!:)

You tell Tate that the one post that you have written that sticks out in my mind and always will is how you returned from Thanksgiving away from him and he had decorated the house for Christmas. Because that is just wonderful. (and I throw it in my husband’s face whenever I get the chance:) )

We almost bought my parents Snuggies for Christmas. Almost. But in my defense, they’re really hard to shop for.

Let me tell you that from cold central Florida – in a house with vaulted ceilings which look all nice and everything but make a room impossible to heat – that snuggie looks pretty darn good to me right now!
I have a Canon DSLR – and I have NO clue, none – about what lenses are good – or better than the two I have. S’pose I should break out that instruction manual
It really is cozy, especially for me. I am ALWAYS freezing.
And I don’t know what lenses you have (I suspect the kit lens 18-55mm & ?) I think the kit lens is actually a pretty great lens. If you were a professional photographer, it wouldn’t be, but for shots of kids, I like mine.
The best lenses are the best lenses you can afford!
The picture was worth a thousand pokes.
Funny! But in Tate’s fairness…you’ll probably get a lot of use out of the Snuggie. hehe
Happy Birthday Tate!!
And way to go with the gifts – nice work!!

My husband should be thankful I have a blog, so I don’t make fun of him to his face as often.
Also, let me know how you like that cookbook. I’m considering…
the Mighty Hinter gave me a beautiful Auburn snuggie. Then he caught a nasty cold and contaminated it with his snotty germs.
Isn’t that the best lens in the world? Prepare to back away from your subject a ridiculous amount.
Happy birthday Tate!
I had to already wash mine. It smelled like it had been sitting on the shelf awhile in Walgreens. I noticed that it said to line dry it?? Seriously, who does that Snuggie think she is? A cashmere sweater?
I dried it in the DRYER and put her in her place.
You will love, love, love that lens. Send in the warranty card, though. My focus died a few weeks before the warranty was up. Free replacement FTW!
I kinda want a Snuggie. I think. Maybe.

Lol, I have the pink snuggie too. My husband and I make fun of it, but I secretly LOVE IT!
(I secretly love it, too.)
Happy birthday Tate!
I think the Snuggie is a hilarious gift! I would die laughing if my hubby bought me one. I almost talked him into bringing a Snuggie for dogs to his White Elephant gift exchange at work but he was too lazy to go find one so he settled on beer and lotto tickets.
Awww, Happy Birthday to your hubs!
I got a Snuggie, too. I think it’s hideous, but quite cozy, but mine is crap brown. Would have loved pink…

Jeebus, this was funny. And I’m the only one in the house who hasn’t yet gotten to use my new not-pink Snuggie, which I will hold and pet and love and cradle and name him George.

The Snuggie is hilarious! Props to your hubby on at least making a great effort with the lens and cookbook. My hubby couldn’t be bothered to even try. I just discovered your blog and interestingly enough, I think we might live in the same town. It’s such a small world!

What wonderful and thoughtful Christmas gifts! Of course, you need to know that this is a compliment from a gift-giving challenged person. Just ask my husband.

Happy Bday to your good-sport husband!
I hear you on wanting to be surprised. If my husband does manage to surprise me, it is usually a month before the date I should be receiving the gift. Last year he gave me an iPhone around Thanksgiving (my Christmas present.) Luckily he is a fantastic gift buyer…I just receive the gifts early. He is just so excited, he cannot wait.
I am not quite sure what to say about the Snuggie.

my husband/kids got me the same lens for my nikon. i am oh-so-totally in love with it.
especially since i got it a bit early so that i could use it too.
it’s something i would have never bought for myself in a very long time … so it’s nice to be spoiled occasionally! now i just have to figure out if i’m gonna trust him enough to use it in the delivery room … or if i’m going to be taking pictures of myself having a baby! (can you tell i’m a little overprotective of my camera?)
.-= jen´s last blog ..apparently someone in texas has too much time on their hands … =-.
I know exactly what you mean about being overprotective with it. My kids know that they are to NEVER, EVER touch it. My husband is sometimes allowed, but I fret the whole time he’s holding it.
OMG! That is one of the funniest things I have ever read… The snuggie for kids made an appearance under our tree this year from some friends of ours and our kids LOVE IT! I would have never bought one… He definitely surprised you!

Happy Birthday, Tate. May the coming year hold all you dream, and more.
Love your presents, Jennifer. My hubby decided after Christmas what he would give me, because we really had no idea. So my overlocker is being serviced, and I get cash to do with as I wish. Now *I* have to decide myself…there is always something in the way of sewing or scrapbooking…
Love the Snuggie, but do question his reserving it for “Last Present” status.
What a really love is that lens….. rawr. The Nikon version is the next item on my “Must Have” photography equipment list.
My husband doesn’t always appreciate me “spinning yarns” from his antics, either. He actually read one of my posts the other day and said, “Hey! I did NOT say that! You are making me look a lot worse than I am here.” To which I replied, It’s the story teller’s right to embellish. It stays.”
Damn straight, get your own platform.

Omg I am soooooo jealous of that lens! Thing to explain to my husband that the difference in one stop is worth $300 may be a futile endeavor, though.
What a guy!
