I’ve Never Seen “The Sound of Music.” Really.

Welcome!  So glad you found your way here!  Have a seat, make yourself comfy.

Hey you!  Don’t put your drink down in my sidebars!  You’ll leave a ring.

********

I read this post by kellyo75 last week and she admitted to having never seen Say Anything.

I’ll pause for a moment while you regain your composure. Breathe deeply. Deeeeeply. In. And out.  In.  And out.  Atta girl. I’m not certain how that’s possible either to not have seen Say Anything.

Feeling better now? Good.

While I can’t imagine life not knowing the quirkiness that is Lloyd Dobler, I can appreciate that not all people have seen the movies that I find to be quite enjoyable. With that said, I hope that I won’t cause more hyperventilation when I confess that I’ve never seen The Sound of Music. Really. In fact, I have very little desire to see it. I’m just not that into musicals.

“The hills are alive with the sound of music….” blah, blah, blah.

Also, I’ve never seen Braveheart. You know, the bloody painted faces and Mel Gibson flick. I assume that this won’t cause you to lose sleep, but I just thought I’d mention it since my husband finds it unbelievable that this is a movie I’ve never seen.

Thinking about these movies I haven’t seen made me start reflecting  on overrated movies.  *stares inquisitively while tapping chin with index finger* Here is my pick for the most overrated movie ever…and the award goes to….

There’s Something About Mary.

*uses index finger to fake gagging*

“There’s something about paying hard earned money to sit and watch that turd of a movie” is more like it.

*more gagging*

I remember sitting in the theatre, after having heard that it was THE FUNNIEST MOVIE EVER!, and thinking to myself that I wanted to leave or gouge my eyes out. But since I’d paid, I stayed (and left my eyes alone), hoping against hope that the movie would improve. It didn’t.

I feel the same way about those Meet the Parents movie.

*barforama*

I guess I’m just not that into Ben Stiller.

So let’s get to the discussion, what movies haven’t you seen that everyone else in the entire world (including Lichtenstein) has seen? OR!!! Even better…what movies have you seen and wish that you hadn’t? (I hear Knocked Up is as good as There’s Something About Mary…anyone? Anyone??)

Discuss.

Never seen Sound of Music? I made my parents take me to Salzburg from Vienna (6 hour drive) just to go on the official Sound of Music tour.

Braveheart? I did my senior thesis in college on William Wallace.

I’m having a hard time loving you like I do right now, J. But, you’ve forgiven my son’s longalls, so I will cope.

I so agree on Something…never seen it…don’t want to. Don’t like crude comedy.

I have never seen Fast Times at Ridgemont High. That amazes pepole from time to time. I also haven’t seen any of the Bourne films.

And whenever I hear that someone hasn’t seen Braveheart, it DOES make my jaw drop. That is my favorite movie ever! Every time I watch it, and I’ve seen it A LOT, I hope and hope and hope that William Wallace arrives in time to save his lovely bride from getting her throat slit. And every time, he’s too late. I guess if he would have saved her, he wouldn’t have gone on his rampage and that would have made for a very short movie, but every time I watch it, I still have hope. You MUST watch it.

Cool new digs, Babe! Looks great.

How DID you know I sat my drink down? ~scary~

Now, in the interest of full-disclosure, I’ve never seen Say Anything either.

However, my homegirl BOSSY’S obsession with Cusack makes me want to see it.

Yay for the new digs! I’ll even forgive you for all of the eye references (I have a bit of an eye phobia (?).

Hated There’s Something About Mary and just about every other Ben Stiller film. I’m not a fan.

I’ve met 4 people that had never seen Star Wars before we met. I remedied that. 3 of ‘em even liked it. I thought it incredibly strange that they had not been exposed to it.

Overrated films? The English Patient. Yawn-Fest. I also do not like It’s a Wonderful Life. I know, stop booing. I find it depressing and hokey.

I too have never seen Fast Times at Ridgemont High. I figure I’ve gone this long, it is too late now.

I too have never seen Braveheart and…. and I never will!!!! An overrated movie, IMHO, is Austin Powers. I saw about 45 minutes of the first one, wanted to tear out my eyelashes and turned it off. I have no desire to ever watch it all the way through or any of its sequels. I do heart The Sound of Music though. I tried to get my husband to agree to name one of the girls Leisl, it was shot down.

I hate Something about Mary! Definately wasted money – Meet the Parents as well. Knocked Up just irritated the hell out of me.

I suggest watching Sound of Music when Ella is old enough to enjoy the music and the children dancing. The first half is worth it – I’ll watch the second half depending on my mood. It slows quite a bit after the intermission.

Sorry… never seen (or even heard of) Say Anything… does that make me bad? :) But then again I bet you could name 10 movies and I wouldn’t have seen any of them…

Sound of Music on the other hand… lets just say I grew up in a town called the Bavarian Village and they do that play every summer… I played in the pit orchestra for it for two summers. If I never hear that music again it will be too soon!!!

I would have to agree with MH on the Austin Powers stuff too. We were supposedly watching it at a youth group event… and I made the leader turn it off. It was so crude.

LOVE LOVE LOVE Say Anything. You are now dear to my heart for posting of Lloyd Dobler, the best fictional boyfriend a girl could ever yearn for.

I’ve never seen The Godfather, which I’m pretty sure will get me shot in 5 states, and I fell asleep during The Matrix at the theater (I was pregnant at the time, so maybe it was just me). And the movie I wish I’d never seen but was exposed to at the ripe old age of eight? A Clockwork Orange.

I agree with you on the Ben Stiller movies. I can’t stand them. The only one I really liked was Meet the Fockers and that’s just cause of Dustin Hoffman and Barbra Streisand. As for Knocked Up, I actually liked it, but that was mostly for the bits between Seth Rogen and Paul Rudd.

I love your new diggs! I could get really comfortable here.

    Movie I’ve never seen……..
It’s a Wonderful Life. Think it will be on TV soon?

My husband has never seen The Sound of Music. His sister worships the movie, I’m not sure how he avoided watching it.

    OK — don’t scream … I haven’t seen “It’s a wonderful life.”

Oh my gosh! The Sound of Music is one of my favorite movies of all time – but if you don’t like musicals, then you would probably hate my list of favorites – Chicago, Moulin Rouge, Beauty and the Beast – the singing! the dancing! I love it!
We were told by many people that Old School was THE BEST movie EVER – so we added it to our Netflix list, waited for it to arrive, and then settled down for a “family style date night” (You know, kids are in bed, we’re in PJs). The movie started and I kept waiting for it to get funny. Waiting…waiting…waiting…Nothing. I hated that movie. My brother-in-law was so surprised when we complained, “but it’s so funny!” Uh, no, it wasn’t. Not at all.

I’ve never seen Star Wars. To be honest, I’m surprised my husband married me when he found this out.

Also never seen Say Anything, Braveheart, Rambo, Gone with the Wind, Footloose, or any Mob movies.

While I can’t agree with you on the musicals…I can’t believe there is someone out there who hasn’t fallen in love with John Cusak in Say Anything…

    Nice New Diggs. Ya you.

Ooooooh, new digs! Me likey! It loads super-fast (your other place used to take awhile to load the white post area).

But ya gotta watch “Sound Of Music” at least once.

“Lloyd, Lloyd, all null and void . . . ” I love that movie! Meet the parents makes me cringe, and not in a good way. And I thought Knocked Up was definitely overrated. I never saw Schindler’s List.

HI! I also like your new home. Vurry purdy. Purdy indeed.

I must join the “never seen Sound of Music” mob. But I LOVE the Meet the Parents movies. Ben Stiller is a comedic king in our house.

Now, with that said, I can say that there are few movies that I haven’t seen. We don’t watch a lot of “TV”, just movies on FX, pay-per-view, etc.

    I haven’t seen Napoleon Dynamite.

Say Anything can probably be my best EXCUSE for losing my virginity. Ione Skye and I were sooo much alike. We just couldn’t come up with a reason NOT to.

What’s that you say? “waiting till marriage?” “sin in God’s eyes?” “breaking my mom’s heart?” nope, didn’t win out over “I just did it anyway.”

I suppose I should be embarassed, but I’m actually kinda proud of myself for bringing up pre-marital sex here in your new home. And I didn’t even bring a house-warming gift. Sheesh! What a crappy friend I am!

I’ve never seen There’s Something About Mary either. It was on, free, for a few weeks a bit ago and I TRIED! I tried REALLY, REALLY HARRRD. But couldn’t do it. GAH! And I’m a Ben Stiller fan, too (Night At The Museum is pretty funny).
Have you ever seen Sliding Doors? It’s one of my favourites that I recommend to everyone.

I agree completely on There’s Something about Mary and Meet the Parents. I didn’t care for either. I also feel the same way about Ace Ventura, the Cable Guy, Dumb and Dumber, etc. I do love Braveheart though. You should watch it. I was the only person I knew at one time who hadn’t seen Saving Private Ryan until I finally broke down and watched it last year. It was pretty good. I’m sad as I read the other people’s comments on all the movies they haven’t seen. How can you not watch Its a Wonderful Life at Christmas? Gack!

    Like the new place! Sweet!
My husband references “Every Which Way But Loose” sometimes and I just always stare at him blankly.
Also have never seen Napoleon Dynamite.
I liked Knocked Up but sometimes I feel the burning need to break away from Blue’s Clues and Max and Ruby and watch some really raunchy humor.

    Love the new digs!!

I haven’t seen Braveheart either, if it makes you feel better. But then again, there are LOTS of movies that I have never seen.

I have seen Say Anything though (meh) and There’s Something About Mary (also meh, though there were parts I did find pretty funny.)

And lots of people haven’t seen It’s a Wonderful Life, I see? Good for them. I HATE that movie.

Say Anything is my all time favorite movie. I found Something About Mary to be funny but not the funniest movie of all time. There aren’t many I haven’t seen since I used to work at a video store and the whole movie thing is sort of our thing. However, when I met my husband I don’t think I had seen Star Wars or The Godfather which did make his jaw drop for sure. I have remedied that well over a dozen times now.

I thought Knocked Up was hysterical, but it could have been that it came at a time that I could really relate to the story. Now for movies that were totally overrated. Titanic for sure and I thought Napoleon Dynamite was beyond boring. I didn’t even finish it. I was like “this isn’t even about anything.” I know I’m in the minority there but I thought it was awful.

    Congrats on the new site!

Steve likes to make fun of me for never having seen Apocalypse Now, and while I enjoyed Knocked Up, it wasn’t really anything to write home about. I do love dumb-ass comedy however, Blades of Glory? Awesome.

Oh the many times I’ve heard, “You haven’t seen that? Do you live on Earth?” Gah there are so many overrated movies out there I just don’t have the time.
Something About Mary, totally skipped it too. The Sound of Music however, once you’ve seen those adorable kids singing So Long Farewell…. well you’ll just never be the same ; )

Let’s see … I’ve never seen “Castaway” or “Forrest Gump” – neither one.

    Never have. Never will.

That’s probably not as bad as the fact that I have never seen an episode of “Friends” or “Seinfeld” in my life – but it’s close.

Never seen Titanic, Mystic River, Meet the Parents, Meet the Frockers, or Casablanca.

Never seen “Say Anything” That is the saddest thing I have ever heard. That is almost as bad as never seeing 16 Candles, The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink and St Elmo’s Fire.

I have never seen Gone With the Wind. I started to watch it a few months ago (right after my surgery) but I think my pain meds kicked in and I fell asleep. On the other hand, Braveheart is a definite must see.

  45. Maggie
    December 4, 2007 | 2:32 pm

Fancy new place – very nice! I have not seen all sorts of ‘must see’ movies. Not having seen The Godfather tends to get a lot of jaw dropping. But name any children’s movie and I’ve probably seen it enough times to recite it for you!

  46. Miss
    December 4, 2007 | 2:49 pm

LOVE the new place. I’ll try not to spill anything while I’m here. Braveheart? You aint missing a damn thing. That movie was stupid. Knocked up? You are missing out, that movie was GREAT. I cant think of anything “popular” that I haven’t seen… Ooh I thought of one. Reality Bites. And I love Ben Stiller. LOL.

Congrats on the new home on the web. I’ll probably be commenting more now – I alwayws read your posts, but for some reason the Blogger page took forever to load.

Ummm, I’ve never seen Say Anything. But to have not seen The Sound of Music?!? WHAT?! I think I’d seen that a milliion times by the time I was 10.

Most overrated movie in my mind – Castaway. I remember hearing all these rave reviews and then we went and saw it and about went crazy with boredom.

I cannot believe all you people who have never seen Braveheart. GAWK! Love that movie. The music really gets to me.
