A Diaper, Diaper, Diaper Cha-a-ange
After the close call with potty training we had a few weeks back, Carson now continually denies the presence of any poop in his diaper. Since his poo practically smells like roses or freshly baked cookies *bullshit*, I occasionally miss a dirty diaper.
He is content to sit in his own filth until I finally get around to changing his diaper. Poor guy has probably sat in poop for HOURS.
Not really. (Well maybe really.)
Of course I change his diaper on a very regimented schedule. (Or maybe I should??)
How often do you change diapers? I’m just curious to see if you do it as often as I do, you know, the MOTHER OF THE YEAR.
(Here’s a link to the inspiration for the post title. I mean, if you care. Not that I expect you to, just in case you were wondering. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRrZZcb5UYU. Beware, if you listen to the song, it’ll be in your head until the end of time.)

That song cracks me up. I didn’t even go to the link and I have it in my head now, so thanks
I change the J-dog’s diaper (he’s twenty one months old) about five times a day: morning, mid-morning, before naptime, after naptime, and before bed. Barring any pooptastic disasters in between regularly scheduled changes, of course.

Luv ya babe…but I ain’t clickin’ that link. I get ENOUGH songs stuck in my head *giggle*
On the other note…changing diapers. I do it far too often because I can’t MISS a poopy diaper with the way my kids stink to high heaven.
However, there have been occassions that they have sat in their own filth in their bedroom for a while because it wasn’t time for them to be up yet. (I SERIOUSLY need to get curtains in that room…like NOW.)
M has recently started the potty training…and much to my dismay I’ve learned that she pees….every.thirty.minutes. Seriously. I never leave the bathroom.

I don’t change often cause they don’t care and diapers are expensive so I want to get as much out of them as possible (yes, I’m Mother of the Century! w00t!). They get changed after breakfast, either before or after lunch (as needed), before or after nap (as needed), and bedtime. That’s the most recent, though, and they aren’t peeing as much these days. A month or so ago it was breakfast, mid-morning, after lunch, after nap, bedtime.
This is all excluding the poopy change, as that’s done as soon as I detect it and can get to it.

didn’t click the link either…do not need another song filling my brain this morning. I am superman from REM has been there for days and I’m happy with that. Thank you.
I change Cooper about 5-6 times a day. He poos about 4 times a day so those first four times are just me trying to get the stink out the house.

That song makes me smile. All you people saying you change your kid 5 times a day do not. WOW do I suck. Poopy? Instant change. Other than that, if it ain’t dragging on the floor, that diaper can still hold more.

I change Ava’s diaper when the stinch knocks me off the couch…
Joking~ We go thru about 5-8 diaps a day, more when she’s teething (she loves to try for the poop-trifecta!).

My kid is on a poop schedule. She always poops after snack, around 10-11, so I know to keep an eye (er, a nose?) out for it.
But other than that, I change her every 2-3 hours or so, and she is starting to tell me when her diaper is too wet. Since she won’t wear pants in the house, she’ll pull at her diaper and say “squishy. off? off?” I think she got that because i norder to feel if she needed a diaper change I would squeeze the diaper and is she was “squishy” it was time to change but if she was still “crunchy” she was dry enough.
I’m so weird.

Both of mine- happy to sit in it forever. I change first thing in the am, pre-afternoon nap, post-afternoon nap (sometimes) and bed. And only “as needed” otherwise.
Yep - I’m mother of the year.

I’m with Teri. On a good day.
On a normal day, the poops get changed immediately (they REEK — seriously, the other day he had one that you could smell for miles, and I opened up the diaper and the poop itself is like the size of a quarter. Insane poop-to-stink ratio) and the pees … well let’s not go there.

We’re at the same stage. Dylan is perfectly happy to sit in his own sh*t for HOURS, because he HATES having his diaper changed but REFUSES to use the potty. We can’t even bribe him - thomas? board games? Just use the potty- It was even the subject of my last post. So, he gets changed in the AM, in the afternoon before nap time and evening before bed and in between if he poops. Since he hates having his diaper changed so much, I’m thinking about buying cheapie diapers and changing him constantly. Maybe then he’ll decide to use the potty.

I wait to change Babyhead’s diaper as well. Mainly because I want him to TELL me he needs a diaper and that I want him to get so sick of being in a wet diaper that he WANTS to go to the potty. However…I try to change poopie diapers right away only because his bm’s tend to be nasty and more than once I have had to clean up poop off the floor where he has managed to either squish a turd out or one time he actually reached in and HANDED me a turd. Ew.
Sandy’s last blog post..You really suck. >:-(
I’m bad about this, I can admit it. But my kid would sit in it all day. She doesn’t give a fig about wet n’ dirty. I try to do it every three hours or so. Also, I’m trying to make her hate the wet diaper, since I’m engaging in guerilla waefare, er, potty training.
Really? You want to know when we change diapers? Okay…
I change the Baby’s diaper -
Before his early morning feeding
Then when he’s up for the day
Before nap (if it’s needed, usually I just check and see)
After nap
Before second nap (if it’s needed…)
After nap
Before bed (this last stretch is the longest we go without changing his diaper)
Before Quinn was potty trained I barely changed his diaper - those things hold a LOT of pee. Sometimes the diaper would get sooo full of pee that it would be all saggy and droopy - so then I’d change it. And, since Quinn was a very scheduled Morning Pooper - I didn’t really have to worry about poop in there.

Oh, you mean I’m supposed to change diapers too?? Lordy, they are sooo needy, aren’t they?
Mine is perfectly content to sit in a poopy diaper. It’s gross. I wonder if he will ever be potty trained.
Actually am foraging through the basement boxes today looking for potty seat…haven’t found it yet.

Hmmm, I have to say that I change my youngest like 3 times a day or more if needed. But she doesn’t really need to be changed more than that. Or, I’m lazy, not sure which one.
They get changed when they need it. Usually when the stench is so overwhelming that I cannot bear it any longer! HAH!
No, not that often!
But seriously, they get changed when it needs to happen or at least before nap and bed!

ahhhh…the wonderful world of diaper changing!
I try to get the stinky ones right away. Otherwise, I wait until before/after naptime and at bedtime.
Changing his diaper is like wrestling a crocodile!

First thing in the morning. Before nap. Afternoon. Bedtime. Usually one additional change if we’re going out or if they clearly need it. Sometimes mid-morning if we’re at the top end of a diaper size and capacity is suffering.

I change diapers within two hours after eCliare gets up in the morning. Again around noon. Again somewhere mid afternoon (within about two hours after nap) and again before bed. And I’ll change her diaper if she poops.
That’s it.
As little as possible.
And now I’ve resorted to letting her run around sans diaper. I HATE the diaper. It chaps my hands.
Mother of the Year? I am not.

I change Cordy generally when she wets through her pants.
OK, not really, but it seems like it. I change her 5-6 times a day at least, but she has a champion bladder and seems to wet through at least once a day. We even use those “cool alert” pull-ups, and she doesn’t seem to care about the cool sensation. She may never potty train.
Mira still goes through 6-7 diapers a day. But she’s little, and I’m not trying to coax her into potty training yet.

I think I probably changed SB’s diaper A LOT more than I needed to …. He too would have been perfectly content to sit in it … one of the reasons he was so late to potty train is that he enjoyed feeling the weight of the wet diaper on him (sort of like one of those weighted vests they make).
He often wakes up in the morning with a poopy Good Night so I change that right away … and then on with the underwear!

i remember once sitting with a friend who had only one child and she frantically pulled out all her gear - change pad, diaper, cream etc. to change her child…and my friend and i (who each had three at the time) looked at each other and then looked at her and both said “you are changing a pee?”
ahahahaha

I feel like I am changing diapers or giving potty reminders ALL the time, but really it isn’t all that often. First thing in the morning, before nap, after nap, and then before bed. Garrett is (mostly) potty trained now, and can wait FOREVER before going…although I usually make him go about every 90 minutes, for fear that he will ‘forget’ to tell me and pee on the floor.
But both boys are very content to sit in a wet/dirty diaper…something that TOTALLY grosses me out!

I have to admit I was MUCH worse on the diaper changes for the 2nd baby. I would forget how much they pee and poop and only checked every few hours when his older brother’s fumes would get to me. But the poor guy was always in wet diapers.
Not having diapers in this house anymore….I say only when I worked at the daycare did we have a regimented schedule.
I tried to check the kids every few hours when I remembered, but relied on them to let me know themselves….ZBear always did, not so much the other 2.
We never had serious rashes though, so I guess that was a good thing.

Dylan is going to be 3 March 1st and I change him roughly 5-6 times a day. We’re playing around with potty training, that is to say, he loves to say he has to potty we run expectingly into the bathroom he sits down and squeese out ONE TINKLE we do the happy dance, he plays around with the potty that plays music, we get pull up back on, return to whatever was occupying our time seconds before the emergency pee drop, only to do it all again in 10 minutes.
Poop, is another thing all together. He goes and hides to poop and then will swear up and down that he did not poop, then when I look and say “Dilly, you did too poop” he says “keekee poop in me diaper” (kitty) ugh! lol

Seriously not over-inflating the number, I changed Parker 10-12 times a day when he was an infant. It went down to about 8-10 changes a day once he wasn’t 100% breastfed.
As a toddler and up to potty training, 6-8 diapers a day.
This is a former soap box of mine, so I don’t know what else to say for fear of having to duck from everyone else.
Clearly I win Mother of the Year by a landslide.

Kidding… I changed Elliot way more than I’m changing Arlo. I don’t know if I’m lazier or busier. I probably change him maybe 6 times a day? And never in the night. Night time is for sleeping (my maniacal changing of Elliot every time she woke in the night may account for her abysmal sleep record as a baby).

Dude, I think I’m a bad mom. I have a 2 1/2 year old and change him morning, noon, and night, whether he needs it or not. And, yeah, I’ll add an extra change if he poops, but he only does that once every week or so (I know, problematic), so I’m usually at 3 diapers a day.

I average between 5-6 diapers a day. I remember when we visited daycare once, and I asked that question (for an infant) and they said at least 3 times. I high-tailed it OUTTA there!
P.S. Love the tomorrow post.

So happy to past those days. But I think it was around 5-6. We are even in big girl underwear at night now. In fact, if anyone wants two brand new packs of Princess or Dora pull-ups, email me. Just a little random act of kindness.

Thanks so much for bringing this up - I feel so much better about my diapering now. Lovebug probably gets 5 changes a day, Ironflower gets new training pants maybe twice a day. Barring bizarre happenings, of course.

NOOOOO!! I clicked the link!! LOL
We do prolly 5 diaps a day??
I use an overnight, which he stays in until after breakfast, b/c the kid gets HANGRY (hungry+angry), which means I can’t change him till he gets his food (and those overnights are awesome!). Fresh diap after breakfast which usually lasts until after lunch. Fresh diap before nap #2 and usually a change in the late afternoon/early eve. Then the overnight.
So, 4-5 a day I would say. Less if I forget, more if there’s a lot of “production” going on.
Savvy?

Since we’re a cloth diaper family, I change S every few hours. If he poops, I try to get to it pronto, since it makes a way bigger mess if it just sits there.

we do cloth too - so I change as soon as the chuffing stops that alerts me that it’s time to do laundry.
otherwise … uh.. when my hand feels damp or when I’m getting ready to leave the house. diaper changes are an olympic event right now. I dread them.

Seriously, I think my 9-week old gets about 20 changes per day. Am looking forward to the more mature 5-6 that most people seem to be reporting. I think we change him more often because he’s in cloth, and because it’s the first thing we check every time he cries, and he cries A LOT! Actually, when he sleeps for several hours, or is content for a long stretch while playing in his bouncy seat, I notice the diaper after that is a lot wetter, like several pees worth! — and he hasn’t said a pee-p.
Thanks for opening this discussion jennifer/playgroupie/binky b! Very informative for new-mom-me.

You’re supposed to change them when the diaper is threatening to pop, right? Isn’t that what the weight on the bag means?
No, really, I’m a nanny to 18 month old twins (soon to be a mommy, hooray!) and we go with the first thing in the morning, mid morning, before nap, after nap, before dinner, and before bed schedule. And of course as soon as there is a clean diaper mid morning, I can almost guarantee a poop from each of them. They’ve taken to hiding behind things while they’re pooping, so I don’t change their diaper. I don’t think they realize yet that it’s not only the red face and grunting that gives them away!
