Rather than allowing Carson to watch yet another hour of television, I decided to turn on the radio. I scanned the dial, attempting to find a station suitable for tender, young ears. Oh how I miss Radio Disney on cable. I can’t believe I just typed that.
I finally found the oldies station-or so I assumed. The first few songs we heard were what I consider to be oldies, like a song from the Supremes and some other not-so-new sounding songs. The radio announcer came on and said the call numbers, “Oldies 93.4, New Town!”
It was official, I’d indeed found the oldies station.
But then, the next song played was that duet between George Michael and Aretha Franklin from the 80′s. Do you remember that song? I Knew You Were Waiting For Me?
“Huh?” I thought to myself. That didn’t really seem like an oldies song. I checked the radio thinking that maybe Carson somehow changed the channel, but he hadn’t and I was confused. 80′s? Oldies??
They played a few more traditional oldies then suddenly I heard Karma Chameleon by Culture Club. What???? Then Mr. Roboto by Styx. Um, no?? Then Come Undone by Duran Duran. That song came out in the 90′s dammit!!!
And then “Oldies” 93.4 played the kicker.
Wanted Dead or Alive by Bon Jovi.
I’m writing a letter to the station DEMANDING a retraction! The INDIGNITY! Bon Jovi IS NOT an oldies band. I cannot accept this! I’m not old enough for one of my all time favorite songs to be played on an OLDIES station.
*weeps*
*weeps some more when I realize I could have listened to appropriate radio stations online and avoided this heartache*
What are your all-time favorite songs that are surely being played on some oldies station?

Two days in a row and I’m first? Wow!
Uh, listen, that is so not oldies music. No. NO. See, ’cause oldies music is what my parents listen to and there isn’t any Culture Club or Bon Jovi. No, it is like the Stones, Zeppelin and Beatles.
God help me if my (sniff) music is (sniff) now oldies.
Does that mean I am OLDies too?
Thanks for ruining my day…. (:

OK….So I happen to like the Stones, Zeppelin and the Beatles!!! ( also really like Bon Jovi) You know what they say……oldies but goodies . Sounds more like just a classic rock station…NOT OLDIES!!!
I’ve had the same experience here that had me reaching for the Geritol.
“Jesse’s Girl” on the oldies station makes me feel ancient.

Oh No! This is terrible – these songs are soooo not Oldies. I love the song “Come On, Eileen”. That doesn’t make me old, right?!?!

I have a strange but fierce addiction to the music of the 80s….and it can in NO WAY be considered old!
Oldies is what they used to play at sock hops or something…

In Jersey, you’d never hear him on an oldies station. It’s like blasphemous or something.

I remember growing up listening to the ‘oldies’ station with my mom. The call phrase being “hits of the 50′s and 60′s” ….then it became “the 60′s and 70′s…” Then when the ‘oldies’ station started playing “hits of the 70′s, 80′s…and TODAY” My 20-year old heart whimpered. But no, I was still cool…still modern…the 80′s don’t call to me…
But then when the ‘classic’ station started playing the hits of the “80′s, 90′s, and TODAY!!” I all out cried. When did I become…my MOTHER?

We love Jon Bon Jovi at our house! My 5-year-old is a groupie. Seriously.
The worse was hearing GNR on the oldies mix station. Yeah…that made me reach for the prune juice.
(And dude…I am going to be 39 in August. So let’s go easy on the geriatric talk. I do highly recommend Neutrogena or Dove eye cream, though. Cough.)
They’re so very mistaken. No way Bon Jovi is “oldies”.
By the way, Radio Disney is 98.3 in Indy. It’s the first preset on my car radio. Of course I don’t listen to it unless The Kid is in the car….ahem….of COURSE I don’t…

Get Sirius radio….even just the online version. They have radio Disney all the time. Not much money for a monthly subscription. Worth it to save your sanity.

The station is actually WRONG. “Oldies” are not just “old songs,” they’re SPECIFIC old songs—from the 1950s and 1960s. Songs from the ’80s and ’90s, they may call “flashbacks” or whatevs, but not OLDIES.

Oh yeah, I hear GREAT songs on our oldies station all the time. I comfort myself with the fact that the only reason I’m listening to the oldies station is because there’s no good alternative station around here. But that hasn’t changed the fact that the oldies station plays stuff I listened to IN COLLEGE.

I lurv Monster Ballads…you know the 80s ballads from Big Hair Bands? They tend to play those now on “oldie” stations.
You know what is worse…
I feel old for preferring to listen to them rather than the new whipper snapper stuff of today.
Please pass the wrinkle cream.

Bon Jovi Slippery When Wet came out when I was in 2nd grade. Ergo, it’s old. Oldie? Not so much. I would hardly even classify it as Classic Rock although there is some overlap with clear classic rock / prog rock / glam rock bands like Queen or Rush. Oldies are sock hop music from the 50s and 60s that my mom played in our 1977 Pinto station wagon on its AM only radio on the way to school in the morning.

I’m a full 10 years + older than you – so how do you think this makes ME feel? LOL It kills me when I listen to the radio and they’re playing Aerosmith as a classic rock band – or yeah, all those others that everyone else has mentioned – I’m like NOT EVEN CLOSE to being the age where MY music is oldies, dammit – not even close. I’d like to file a petition… right after my afternoon nap.

We’ve got a station like that, but also a real oldies station — they only go up into the early 80′s now, HA!
It’s so depressing, isn’t it? I miss all the REALLY old music.
Our kids must think 80′s music sounds SO LAME.

I listen to Justin T. and Avril Lavigne**, mostly. They’re still playing on the CURRENT stations. Like, they’re totally rad and hip and MODERN. Right?
*Okay, I’m going to burn in music hell for feigning stupidity on who Bon Jovi and Duran Duran are. I hope the rock Gods can forgive me.
**I’m SUPER going to burn in music hell for saying I’d listen to JT & Avril over DuranDuran & Bon Jovi. I wouldn’t, although sometimes a girl needs her some JT. Sometimes.

Bon Jovi is definitely NOT oldies!!!
I can’t think of any songs that I used to listen to that I’ve heard on an “oldies” station. What gets to me though, is on that cable station, Turner Classic Movies, they show stuff like Ghostbusters and The Breakfast Club. WTH!!!

Yes, I know, it is SO sad!!! Those are definitely NOT old songs! Weren’t they just on the top 10 a couple weeks ago?
What makes me feel even older than dirt, is when I realize my husband’s high school students and the HS kids on his swim team were actually born in the 90′s! I mean, wasn’t that just a couple years ago? I was already graduated from college and living in a new city in the 90′s. They were literally in a crib (some not EVEN BORN YET) when I was dancing the night away listening to alternative rock like Yaz, Depeche Mode, New Order. Wow.

A few years ago I heard “Every rose has a thorn” on an oldies station and fussed at work. One of my co-workers said she thinks they consider any song that’s 20 years old or older an oldie. I was very upset by this, because by radio station standards, I was an oldie when I was a junior in college. Grrr.
My teenage stepdaughter thought Bon Jovi was a NEW band after hearing their latest song on an easy listening radio station.
I wanted to weep.

As for our radio situation, we have no Oldies station. We have no Top 40 station. All we have is Easy Rock and The Moose (which plays pretty much anything recorded since the beginning of time). Bleh.
