Battling Over Movie Turds

I’d like to introduce you to my sister-in-law, Kate*.  Everyone, say hello to Kate!

This past weekend, Kate and I got into a–I hate to call it heated, so let’s say *LIVELY*–discussion about two of my most detested movies in the universe.

There’s Something About Mary (Blech!  GAG!  Ugh!  Barf-o-rama!)  and The Wedding Date (AWFUL!).

The fact that I spent money, hard-earned money, going to a theatre to watch two turds is one of my life’s greatest regrets.  That’s $14 I’ll never get back.  When I think about the bottle and a half of wine I could have purchased with that money instead, I feel sick.  Just plain sick.

Kate completely disagrees and find these two movies delightful and hilarious.  (YUCK!  I’m gonna hurl.)

I realize that most likely, I’m in the minority on this one as I remember that when TSAM came out, it was a huge hit.  People kept telling me, “Oh you MUST go see that movie!  It’s the FUNNIEST movie EVER made.”  (Like, gag me with a spoon, ya know!)

So what do you think, are you a fan of these movies and agree with Kate?  Or do you agree with me and think they are terrible, horrible, awful, putrid movies?

(Kate would like to tell you all how lovely you look today.)

(I would like to tell you how pretty and smart you all are and how much I look forward to your visits each day.)

Looky here!  You can vote in the handy-dandy poll!

On your mark.  Get set!  GO!

*Kate is a pseudonym.  So is Tate.  My mother-in-law would like to make it known that she would never name her children rhyming names.

  1. Ye also forgot Wedding Crashers. That was the first movie that we say after I had Bacon. We paid an arm and a leg to see that piece and I am still angry about it. It “sucked more than anything that has sucked before” A lot like TSAM. Yes TISAM…SHE SUCKS!

  2. TSAM sucked and it sucked royally. I can not stand Cameron Diaz so that made the suckatude of the movie 10 fold.

I loved The Wedding Date. I could watch it over and over but without paying an arm and a leg to do so.

  3. I would like to add to the turd pile any movies starring Jim Carey, Adam Sandler, or Jack Black. Steaming piles of turd right there.

  4. I hated TSAM! Now, I was the only one in a full theatre not laughing through the whole thing, so we may be in a minority … but I hated it!

  5. I’d like to register a complaint w/Burgh Baby - how can you NOT like Adam Sandler? OMG.

Anyway, I did see TSAM and thought it was OK but yeah - ew - gross.

Never saw the other one, I don’t think.

Kate & Tate. Seriously, I never knew Tate was not his name LOL

  6. The Wedding Date was ok - wouldn’t have gone too see it in the theatre. And I thought TSAM was funny - really I did. But I was also young (?younger) and carefree and had a different sense of humour then.

  7. Husband and I went to TSAM after he INVITED MY MOM TO GO ALONG despite my protests of “she won’t like that kind of movie”. My mom was bored so she said okay, then she AND MY DAD show up at the theater. I refused to sit by them. I was mortified when I heard my father laughing uproariously at the *ahem* bathroom scenes. I think my parents got amusement from the fact that I was so embarrassed about it. Quite possibly the worst 2 hours of my life.

Oh wait. Maybe that was sitting through Waterworld.

Then again, my DH loved Dumb and Dumber…so I can’t use him as a measuring stick.

  11. I’m sorry - we can’t be friends anymore. What’s not to like about The Wedding Date? ;-) I did see it in the movie theatre - and loved that 1.5 hours of oogling at Dermot Mulroney! Bliss, with a bucket of popcorn thrown in for good measure!

I thought parts of TSAM were humorous. I really don’t get a kick out of potty humor and the like so I’m not a huge fan.
I haven’t seen TWD so I have no opinion on that one.

  17. I didn’t like TSAM at all. And with as much hype as they gave it for Brett Favre being in it (back in MS), you’d have thought his part would have been huge. Whatever! It’s probably more due to the fact I can’t stand Ben Stiller.

I haven’t seen TWD yet. I have Netflix, so I don’t feel so guilty if I don’t like the flick.

  20. I loved TSAM, sorry.

I remember finishing The Wedding Date and just turning it off in disgust. I didn’t buy it at all and couldn’t figure out what he would actually see in her. I also find Dermot Mulroney to be too smug for my tastes.

Anyway, I liked TSAM, but I never saw Wedding Date. The movie just plain LOOKED DUMB, so I didn’t waste my money. Of course, I also found Jerry McGuire extremely boring and repulsive. I am an outcast now, aren’t I?

And since I was having problems commenting before….I wanted to let you know of my “almost-related!” celebrity events. Um….I’m from the same small IN hometown as Greg Kinnear. I went to the same college as David Letterman–and had a class NEXT TO the room with his dedication plaque which said “To all C students before and after me.” Oh–and Jim Davis (Garfield creator) went there too–and he was always on campus–maybe at the same event as I was! Oh! And the best–last summer MY kid was on the same t-ball team as LOU GRAMM’S kids. I sat next to him AT EVERY SINGLE GAME, so obviously we are BFFs!

  22. Kate, I think you look lovely, too. In fact, I think you’re also smart, sophisticated, stylish and have great hair. Nevermind that I’ve never seen or met you. TSAM, though admittedly silly, almost caused me to go into premature labor with my first child. I’m still brought to tears when someone yells out, “WE’VE GOTTA BLEEDER!”

  23. While neither are by any means favorites of mine they didn’t totally suck.
I wonder if it was the build up around TSAM that caused you to be disappointed. Everytime people rave about a movie and tell me how hilarious it is I usually don’t find it nearly as funny as they did

  25. I voted that I liked TSAM but not the Wedding Date. But I wanted to clarifiy that I don’t really LOVE TSAM. I just thought it was “okay”. Not awful, but not worthy of the adoration it received either. I’ve DEFINITELY seen funnier. But the Wedding Date was just… boring! It wasn’t funny and it tried to be “poignant” in certain places and I didn’t buy that either. It was just a total waste. Luckily, I just caught it on cable and it’s not like I paid to see it. Whew!

  33. I thought TSAM was fine at the time, funny enough, but I wouldn’t purposely seek it out for another viewing.

I strong-armed my husband into watching The Wedding Date with me on pay-per-view and truly thought it was awful. Lame dialogue, slow pace . . . the list could go on. I am even a Dermot Mulroney fan and I could barely get through it. It was not even a $4 experience. Plus, my hubby and I have a difficult time agreeing on movies we can watch together as it is. Now, when I make suggestions, he cites my choosing of The Wedding Date as a reason not to honor them.

A movie I absolutely hated and regretted spending $1.50 to see at the Super Saver Cinemas in high school: Weekend at Bernie’s.

  35. I am SHOCKED that so many of your readers dislike these classic movies. I mean really, “franks and beans!”…hilarious. I also find it appalling that someone mentioned The Wedding Crashers as an awful movie. WHAT? That is just too much to wrap my head around, because it is one of my all time favorites. Jennifer, it appears I will have to step in and show Carson and Ella the real cinematic treasures of our time :)

  36. I didn’t mind TSAM, but like Teri said, I was younger and I think if I saw it now I would feel much the same way about it as you did. As for Wedding Date, never seen it. Probably because I can’t stand most mainstream comedies. They bore me to tears. And also? Faith and Burgh Baby’s comments were so dead-on.

And while we have “Chick Flicks” movies like TSAM, Dumb and Dumber, Weekend at Bernies, The Wedding Crashers et al are definately Guy Movies.

Oh, I didn’t vote in the poll, but I do love both movies. (but then again, I love a LOT of movies that other people just don’t like) I didn’t go see them in the movie theaters, but when I was able to watch them for free I thought they were fine.

Does that put me somewhere in the middle? I do hope so!

I will never forgive my husband for making me watch Titanic though. I want those 57 hours of my life back. It was the most excruciatingly painful experience of my life. I’ve had drug free births, 10 weeks of nipple thrush, knee reconstructions, broken bones in various parts of my body and NOTHING beats the pain that was watching Titanic. Nothing.
