The hills really ARE alive with The Sound of Music

At the ripe old age of 33, I have FINALLY seen The Sound of Music.

All of these years, not really liking musicals, I’ve avoided The Sound of Music like the plague.  It’s been on TV zillions of times, but I never bothered watching it.

You guys!  I had no idea what I was missing!

The Sound of Music is now one of my FAVORITE movies and I’m totally kicking myself for waiting all these years to see it!

I’ll admit that the first, oh, half hour, I kept thinking, “There sure is a LOT of singing.”  Which yes, thankyouverymuch, I realize that there’s lots of singing in musicals.  Duh.  It just seemed like it was a little cheesy. I nearly turned the movie off.

But then!  Then!  Then I kinda fell in love with the dreamy Captain.  I’d heard he was kinda dreamy, but really?  I didn’t believe it.   I loved how Maria was able to break through his crusty exterior and then he softened and became so dreamy!

And then I wanted to punch out that bitchy Baroness.    From the very beginning, I could tell she was Trouble!  With a capital “T”!  Then I was rooting for Maria to leave the nunnery (or whatever it was called) and be with Capt. von Trapp so he wouldn’t marry that awful Baroness!

And that Rolf, the telegram boy?  I just knew he was a bad guy!  Liesl just HAD to stay away from him.

The drama!  I had no idea there was an actual storyline in the movie with the escape from the Third Reich!  Ooh, it made me so nervous when they got caught trying to get away under the cover of darkness, pushing the car, and seeing that evil Hitler-loving butler watching from the window!  And then when they were hiding in the Abbey after the singing festival!  So much drama!

Eventually, the music grew on me, too.  I’m embarrassed to admit that I’d heard the song “Edelweiss” before, but I had NO IDEA it was from The Sound of Music!  And “My Favorite Things?”  Didn’t know that song had come from the movie.  *shrugs shoulders*

So now it’s my mission to see movies (and TV shows) that I’ve previously snubbed.  I’ve apparently been missing out on CULTURE.

On my list:

1.  Braveheart

2.  Gone With the Wind (from start to finish…not just bits and pieces)

3.  Lost

….What else am I missing?!  I know there’s so much I haven’t seen.  (Especially movies released since Carson was born.  I’ve only been to the theatre three times since he was born.  And one of those times was for that wretched movie Mamma Mia.  GAG-O-RAMA.)

Add to my list!

Ok now if you can get used to the Musical type movies you must see “Hairspray” (2007) with John Travolta, and Chicago. They are both fantastic!

Julie Andrews in her prime–until she got pathetic and had to do The Princess Diaries–that was just wrong.

Okay, I’ve given this some thought and in order to be my best friend you have to have seen:

    Camelot
    SOM and LIKED it.
Love Actually and be really disappointed in Alan Rickman’s character.
Bridget Jones 1. 2 is optional.
    Drop Dead Gorgeous
Firefly (the movie – maybe it’s called Serenity?)
Grease 2 and know the lyrics to Cool Rider
Good Lord, TERMS OF ENDEARMENT and you absolutely MUST start sobbing when it’s time for her pain pills.
We would probably double feature that with STEEL MAGNOLIAS where again, you would have to start crying when Shelbie dies and Sally goes to pick up Jack Jr. from Aunt Fern.

Love LOST, and it is way better when you watch it by DVD or multiple episodes in a row. Better look out though, you may have some late night marathons coming up!

K – I watched the SOM EVERY YEAR when it was broadcast when I was little – it’s a classic that I love and my daughter loves that I sing along to all the songs and know all the words! Here are the two other movies/musicals I will be sure my girl sees as a child: Mary Poppins and the Music Man!!

I watch tons of movies but have never seen “It’s a Wonderful Life” and that is suppose to be a classic.

Dances with Wolves is a great movie.
    More Current movies?
“Memoirs of a Geisha” – amazing
    “Atonement” – very good
“The Brave One” – with Jodie Foster – a kicka$$ thriller

“Pushing Daisies” is great – very quirky and different
“Lost” – addictive. There is a Lostpedia on the web for lots of tidbits (but wait til your caught up- there are lots of spoilers)

I know I watched it a million times as a little kid, but obviously I was too young to understand the storyline or know that it involved Nazis??? Now I have to borrow my mom’s copy and watch again.

Have loved, loved, loved the Sound of Music since childhood. My husband, on the other hand, calls it The Sound of Mucus. When in Salzberg five years ago, I took the Sound of Music tour with my sister. Pretty cool. And yeah, pretty cheesy, corny touristy. Fell asleep on the big, giant comfy bus.
It’s sooooo looooong, but Dr. Zhivago is totally worth seeing. Just plan on seeing it in installments, perhaps in January when you’re snowbound.

To Kill a Mockingbird with Gregory Peck.
    LOOOOOVE it.

And I have been to the sing-a-long version of The Sound of Music where people dress up and all. Too much fun I tell you.

I was Liesl in The Sound of Music in high school. The guy who played Rolf was one of my best friends…it was so weird kissing him! But the show was a blast, one of my very favorites. :)

Oh, The Sound of Music is Awesome. Seriously. But you have seen My Fair Lady and Grease, right? If not, you should.

As for TV series… my favorite is probably Gilmore Girls. It sounds blah but it’s actually awesome. DH was totally skeptical and then he couldn’t stop watching ;-)

My daughter loves SOM. I do too. Couldn’t stand it as a kid myself, but now I love it. It taught her the basics of music. Can’t go wrong with that. She can sing all the songs.

I’ve never seen SOM from beginning to end, but I saw a good part of it the other day. My poor hubs – it’s one of his all-time faves.

To cover myself here: My mom was uber controlling when it came to what I could watch growing up. (I know, SOM seems tame, but she was scared of the flying monkeys in “The Wizard of Oz,” so I didn’t see it until I was much older!)

I never saw “Terms of Endearment” from start to finish until a few years ago either. Wow, adult life has made up for lost time!

I grew up watching old movies and musicals with my parents. We’d sit around the tv singing all the songs together. All my friends used to tease me that I grew up in the 1950’s.
    LOVE The Sound of Music!!!!

Oh, yes, the hills are alive with the sound of hottie Captain Von Trap. But don’t worry, you wouldn’t have appreciated his dreaminess as a child, just Fraulein’s ugly-cool dresses.

Lost is a must. And you have plenty of time to catch up for February’s season-five premiere.

Oh wow, I can’t imagine life without SOM. Although my favorite cheesy musicals are actually Oklahoma and On The Town. You should try those.

I’ve missed a lot of movies since 2004 but I am queen of the TV and I recommend: Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Friday Night Lights (I’ve never seen the movie it’s based on, though), Homicide: Life On The Street and Entourage.

WOW! 123 comments. You must be completely overwhelmed with suggestions. If you ever run out, my list is on my blogger profile.

Sound of Music ROCKS. We just watched part of it today – Frannie got it for her 3rd birthday and is completely sucked in to all the singing and drama and love (altho she may not get the 3rd Reich subplot). Meanwhile, my HUSBAND is watching it for the FIRST TIME with her! Win, Win! Next stop: Oklahoma! (I’m a musical junkie. Shhh.)
