I imagine there was wonderment in his eyes

I think that one of the best things about being a parent is getting to experience the things my kids love.  Yesterday we went to a railroad museum.

linden train museum

Three retired gentleman proudly showed off their love of all things train. Like little kids, you could see their excitement to show off their painstakingly built models.  These men had known one another for years, finishing each other’s sentences and filling in gaps in their stories about the history of the railroad in this part of Indiana.  Their knowledge and dedication was apparent.

Carson didn’t care about the stories. He was in awe of watching as the model trains circled the elaborate track over and over again.

I could have stayed for hours, listening to the mens’ stories and watching the wonderment in Carson’s eyes.  Or at least imagining the wonderment in his eyes.  He wouldn’t turn around and risk missing one of the trains passing by.

I have always said that since I became a mom, the most fun I have is watching my children have fun. It is magical.

Don’t get me wrong, I like to have my own fun, too…

Hey, great idea! My uncle is a train fanatic – I think it’s wonderful. Nothing like a model railroad or a dollhouse – what is it about itty bitty stuff that makes it so universally appealing?

It’s one the best reasons to have a kid. Even though this xmas will be my boy’s second one, it’ll be way more baffling and awesome to him and I cannot wait!

Beautiful and touching post. Something really special about retired folks with a passion for an interest or a hobby that they are willing to pass along to younger generations. Experiencing hat kind of enthusiasm and genuine love is simply priceless.

Looks like fun! I like having an “excuse” to go to places like that and parks and zoos. Of course there’s no reason why I needed to be a parent to do all that.

What is it about boys and trains? When I take Brady to the train show I lose him. He completely zones out. I am with you. That man reminds me of my father. My dad collected trains as a child and can tell you a million stories.

I’m just getting to the trains with my first boy who just turned two. We live across the street from a train station. Every day we cross the street (I bring a book) and we watch the trains for an hour. I just don’t get it – but I’m loving it right there with him!

I find that I’m filled with a similar awe whenever I take my Little Man somewhere like this. He falls completely and utterly in love with a place at first glance (i.e. our Science Centre), and I’m consequently in love with the place, too. I love seeing the world and its wonder through the eyes of my boy. Congrats on finding something wonderful in your area!

Reminds me of one of my twins. We took my kids many times each year to the Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum. At Christmas, Santa is there. Two of the three would always be like SANTA while my younger son would be totally ignoring the Santa with candy and saying TRAINS!

I totally relate with you. I have two boys who have supposedly outgrown Thomas the Tank. Yet, whenever we go to the toy store or they have birthdays, all they still want are trains, trains, and more trains. Something about boys and their trains.

Our railway museum doesn’t look anything like that. It’s dark and boring, and not I’m thinking that I may have to take my son on a road trip.
