Jennifer and Tate’s culinary journey down the International foods aisle! Episode 1

Spotted Dick and Lyle's Golden Syrup

It’s expensive to travel, particularly out of the country.  I want to experience foods from other cultures, so the International food aisle at my local grocery store will have to be my source of culture.

It’s a little dub-t, I guess, experiencing “culture” at my grocery store.

Oh well.

So welcome to the first episode on our journey!

This episode:  Heinz Spotted Dick
Country of origin:  United Kingdom

Tate works with a British chap who laughed when he told him we were going to try some Spotted Dick.  He recommended we try it with some Lyle’s Golden Syrup.   (Mmmmm, Lyle’s.)

Spotted Dick and Lyle's Golden Syrup

We followed the directions on the can, microwaving for several minutes. After cooking, we poured a little heaven, er, I mean, Lyle’s on top.

Spotted Dick and Lyle's Golden Syrup

Verdict:  Well.  Hmmm.  It’s kinda like a dry-ish gingerbread-like cake with raisins. I guess if you like dry cake, gingerbread, and raisins, then this would be a jolly good dessert.

I didn’t much care for it, even when I added more Lyle’s.  Tate really liked it.

Stayed tuned for future episodes of our culinary journey down the International food aisle.  Any and all suggestions would be appreciated.

If you can find them you should really try Wagon Wheels(the British version, not the Canadian one, there *is* a difference). It is a bit like a moonpie, with chocolate, marshmellow and a biscuit smooshed together into a bit of heavenly yummyness.

You should’ve asked – I would’ve warned you straight away from that can.
However, if you can get hold of golden syrup cake, you’ll be in heaven.
Damn, now I’m gonna have to go buy some.

Yuck! You were brave to even open the tin!

Brits have some bizarre desserts :)

As for Wagon Wheels? They are FAR nicer than Moonpies – and now since my husband is currently in Ireland, I’m going to have to call him and get him to bring some back to Florida!

If you like Lyle’s (and who wouldn’t!) you should try making treacle tart, which is basically a golden syrup pie. Yumm-o. (I can e-mail you a recipe if you like!)

When I was little and groceyshopping with my mom, I yearned to try all the food in the adorable jars and bottles on the tops and bottom shelves. You know, the ones that didn’t say Kraft or Little Debbie.
I’ve been trying interesting food based on it’s unique packaging ever since I’ve been buying my own groceries. This series is right up my alley (or aisle.)

DO you live nearby a World Market? If so, they have a nice collection of really great ethnic food and sweets. I have really enjoyed most everything I have tried.

In my next life I would like to be a grocery store buyer. You know, that person that tries foods and decides if they would sell. I love food.

I love Lyle’s. I use it in place of corn syrup.

The other thing you eat it with is custard. Creme anglais if you want to be fancy. Pourable custard, which soaks in & fixes the dryness bit somewhat. Not syrup & custard both though, I don’t think.

Yes, the british have many, many variations of dough with raisins & spices. teacakes, fruitcake, hotcross buns, scones.

the first time I had trifle, I was thrilled that it was basically the same cookies in pudding concept as banana pudding. Except, without the icky bananas! Instead: strawberries! Win!

Especially when you keep putting your kid in camo and flashing your boobs like that.
