I found this post as I was googling around, trying to find reasons to quit or not quit using fake names for my kids.

I started doing it for the exact reason you mentioned, so they won't be googleable, but I'm not really feeling that concern so much anymore, and my pseudonyms are so close to their real names that I'm confusing MYSELF.

Seriously, how bad is it when you tell a story in real life and you use your kid's internet pseudo-name?

Catherine, That is a great question! When I switched my kids' names, I simply mentioned it in a post and updated my family's bios in my sidebar to reflect the change.

A few people were confused, especially since it's rare that anyone reads every single day and never misses a post! Eventually it all worked out, not really even a bump in the blogging road.

So when you switched from nicknames to "real" names how did you facilitate the switch? A post explaining the switch, by changing the nicknames to the "real" names in all of your previous posts? I ask because I am planning to transition from using a nickname and I am just not sure how I want to handle it.

I love this. I do use fake names, but ones that are real.

I think the only thing I'd say on pictures is it's a personal choice. Tons of us don't do it. Doesn't make my stories any less interesting, or my kids any less real. It's really okay either way.

I heard a talk at BH this summer where the person said a blog doesn't seem as real without pictures. I disagree. I told her that after and we talked about it for a bit. For me, it's the fear of my family not finding my blog. So, it's just the way it is for me.

Kim, That's a great question, I don't think I've talked about that in any of my previous blog tips posts.

My opinion is this (based on having said unkind things about my mom and my husband on this blog early on): You can't have it both ways. I know that some widely read bloggers say horrible things about their families, but I don't see how they get away with it. I think that if you want a vent space, that's fine, but it needs to be in the form of an anonymous blog. If you want a blog that can be read by your family AND the rest of us, you really can't use it as a place to vent about family members.

With that said, I do still occasionally complain about my husband, but I try not be too demeaning. I have also talked about embarrassing subjects like sex, peeing my pants, having my period...I've decided, for me, I'm okay with my mom, mother in law, sister in law, aunts, to read that stuff. It's part of who I am.

Yay for the redux! I started my blog this summer and was referred to your tips...so I'll be more of a listener in class. I probably don't have much to contribute for tips just yet. One thing I'd like more info on (and I'm not exactly sure if you covered this in your previous series): How does one decide who will be introduced to their blog, as in...friends, family, public, or all of the above? I want to be able to complain about my mother but yet I also want her to read some of the things I post about myself and my kids. You gotta start somewhere with an audience, right? It's hard to define your "purpose" in the beginning I guess. And by reading some popular bloggers, I often wonder how in the WORLD some of their family isn't aware of their blog...what with their photo being posted as well as pics of their children and sometimes using true names? Some bloggers are downright crude and honest about their family dysfunction, sex lives, etc. I would find these topics to be therapeutic to blog about, but yet I'd be aghast if my mother ever read those things!

Texan Mama, I don't think it's annoying...but it could be confusing to a new reader. Simply Patty and Charlie might be easier for new readers. I also noticed that you don't have a "cast of characters" in your sidebar that lists who's who's on your blog. Those really help new readers figure out who they're reading about. I will talk about this in the upcoming weeks!
