week 4. ready to play in the snow

ready to play in the snow

I am totally and completely in love with this picture of Ella, awake only minutes and already demanding to wear boots to go play in the snow.   And the sunflare!  I can’t believe the sun was in *just* the right spot for me to have captured such lovely sunflare!

Alright, I cannot tell a lie.

The sunflare was added in Photoshop.  I am both appalled at this new knowledge, that sunflare can just be added with a simple click and overjoyed that sunflare can just be ADDED WITH A SIMPLE CLICK.

“Tate!  Look at this picture!  Look at the sunflare I added!  I’ve been trying to capture sunflare with my camera forever and all I had to do was add it in Photoshop!”

He looked at me with a stern expression.  “Isn’t that kind of cheating?”

I don’t have an answer.  I don’t know!  Is it cheating?  (Even if it is cheating, I love this picture with the power of  a thousand burning photoshopped sun(flare)s.)

You can see my entire set of photos for my project 365 {2010} on Flickr.

It’s funny you mention this. My background was in photojournalism back in college (yes, I have forgotten SO much, it’s ridiculous.) And I avoid most editing, other than possibly exposure (which I would have edited while printing anyway, so it seems OK.) And I feel like I’m getting left behind because I don’t change the color of the sky or photoshop things in or out, etc. I don’t have a problem with others doing it, I guess I just remain a purist. (Did I just call you unpure? Totally didn’t mean it that way.)

    Great shot.

ok … i totally GET adding sunflare in photoshop … maybe i’m just jealous that i don’t have photoshop to do it myself.
    but …
there is something really truly magical and amazing when you get the perfect sunflare naturally. i love turning toward the sun when everyone else is anxiously avoiding it in their pictures.
    sunflare makes me giddy.
and boots immediately after waking is adorable. what a doll.

    It is SO NOT CHEATING!

I am *so* (rolls eyeballs) sick of people saying that. Just because photoshop has become more mainstream than it used to be suddenly people are all ready to label it as cheating.

Guess what? Photographers have been doing this forever, only it used to be a far more difficult thing to produce in a poky darkroom somewhere, with carcinogenic chemicals. Fact is they have been doing it nonetheless.

    Cheating. My (rhymes with) *MASS*.

I wouldn’t call it cheating….I would call it enhancing. If it’s cheating then every professional photographer is a cheater in some way!

Great picture! Great sunflare! It’s not cheating. Just imagine what those professionals do to the celebrities! Now that is what I consider cheating.

Oh I don’t know…I think it’s beautiful and an artist doesn’t have to spill all of her secrets, right? Love it. Great shot and love the jammies – we have those at our house, too. :)

It’s only cheating if you are in some kind of “never add sunbursts to your photos” contest. Which you are not! It’s gorgeous and adorable all at once.

Yeah…you totally cheater. Cheater McCheaty Cheaty.
    But I don’t hate you for it. I think it’s RAD. :)
I love that you added the flare…why??? Because in this photos it works! And? We never would have known you added it.

Plus? Art is art. It’s always left up to interpretation. We all get ideas from our surrounding, the people we know and the things that inspire us…it’s what we do with it that makes it our own…thus ART. So…take this into consideration and I think it overpowers the fact that you TOTALLY CHEATED.

You KNOW i had to say it once more…love this image. Love that you cheated, glad you did actually. And love that you TOLD us. :) :)

    Great job, girly.

    totally NOT cheating…

but this is coming from someone who photoshops faces from one picture to another in order to get a passable christmas photo (which, mind you, never gets sent anyways).

I certainly don’t mind the cheating (it is kinda cheating, but it’s allowed). But coming from a past where I have struggled with light-induced headaches (oversensitivity to sensory stimuli), I have to admit the first thing I thought when I saw the picture was that it was beautiful, but if I were the one taking the picture, that light would have bothered me. Yeah.. I know.. I am weird.

My vote is that it’s only cheating if you do it in a cheesy, non-realistic way.

For example, I didn’t notice that it wasn’t real until you pointed it out. (And isn’t it extra-perfect that she appears to be looking at the secondary rings?) But I’m thinking the sun is actually to the right when looking out the window, rather than the left (where it would have to be to make that flare – unless maybe you placed a mirror or crystal in just the right place, just… so.) So it technically is a cheat, because the lighting doesn’t actually support that location, but one done well enough that I think it passes anyway.
