Inventions by people who don’t grocery shop with children

Bad idea

I know that the person who invented mini grocery carts for children meant well.  Obviously that person didn’t have to ever, you know, actually grocery shop with two children.

(The same goes for the inventor of the race-car cart.  Great inventions guys.  Really great ideas.  Me?  Sarcastic?  No way.)

The race car cart SUCKS because it’s inevitable that the family walking in front of us gets it. Or it’s too heavy to maneuver. Or our store has decided that you can’t take it to the parking lot and you have to transfer your two year old to a regular cart at the checkout lane, making him cry.

    The best solution? Shop alone.

I hate those stupid little carts. Getting the backs of your ankles rammed with one of them will scar you for life. Seriously. I am cringing thinking about it. My kids don’t even ask anymore.

I guess it’s hard not to be sarcastic. I get your point. The “aerodynamics” of the grocery carts and the relatively wide grocery lanes are invitations for kids to start racing the carts around. That is why the inventor of the grocery cart that has a seat for kids is one of the wisest men of our time.

Just had an experience with these this week at a thrift store. My 3 y.o. son and I had recently visited our local hands-on science museum for kids. They have this awesome kid-sized grocery store, complete with little carts. Oh, did we have FUN loading up carts with fake food and checking out at the pint-sized check stand (complete with conveyor belt). Good times.

Good times were not to be had this week, however, when we entered a thrift store for the first time and I stupidly point out, “Look, Buddy! It’s a kid cart!” It even had the “Customer In Training” flag fixed to a metal pole on the end of the handle. In training is right! Today’s lesson: adults sometimes make things that seem like fun but really just break your heart.

Next thing I know, the poor kid has loaded the cart to the brim with things he can’t “buy” as he could at the museum. It took some swift parenting skillz to help him with that one. So, cute as they may be, little carts are on my “Nawww” list. Thanks for the post.
